Q: What are some alternatives to Cancer Treatment Centers of America?
My co-worker's brother has cancer, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America is not accepted by his insurance. What other options are available? My Co-worker's brother has cancer, and his insurance does not accept Cancer Treatment Centers of America. He lives in Virginia, but somewhere in North Carolina should be ok also. Thank you so much.

A: Anywhere would be an alternative. This is a private for profit organization that has been in trouble with the FTC for false and unsubstantiated claims. I am not aware of any other hospital that has had this problem. I work for various hospitals throughout Los Angeles County and we have several well-known hospitals here where people come from all over the world for treatment and there are many less known community hospitals that give care that is just as good and in some cases better than these well known hospitals. The best advice I can give to your co-workers brother is to be an informed consumer. He and a trusted friend or family member should learn as much about his disease as possible so that he can ask good questions and make informed decisions. Get opinions from 2 or 3 oncologists that do not practice together. Someone should go with him to all appointments where test results or treatment options are discussed. Keep a running list of any questions he thinks of and take the list with him to his doctors appointments. Unless he has an unusual cancer he should get very good treatment at a hospital his insurance is contracted with. He may also want to check with the American College of Surgeons for hospitals in his area with approved cancer programs. They are responsible for accrediting hospital cancer programs in the United States.

A: I agree with quijjibored; most people who make claims for miraculous cancer 'cures' have also had conventional treatment but claim - and believe - that it was an alternative treatment they also took that did the trick. This is apparently the case with Suzanne Summers. Please bear in mind that the word 'alternative' in this context means 'unproven'. If a medicine has been tested and proven to work, it is no longer 'alternative medicine' it is just 'medicine'. Wherever there's cancer there are people eager to part desperate people from their cash in exchange for ineffective and sometimes dangerous treatments. If you are tempted by any particular 'alternative', please do a search on http://www.quackwatch.org for some facts before investing money, hope and (most dangerous of all) time in something that will not work and will delay effective treatment. There is no way that Suzanne Summers or any other breast cancer patient can know that they are 'cancer-free' - breast cancer can recur at any time, even years after diagnosis and treatment. Conventional treatment isn't perfect, far from it, but we know - because it has been rigourously tested and proven in double-blind, peer-reviewed clinical trials - that it saves many lives and prolongs many more. No 'alternative' treatment has been tested and proven in this way. I sympathise with your wish to pursue less traumatic alternatives; when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 I was something of an alternatives enthusiast. Nobody was going to give ME chemotherapy! I researched thoroughly and in the space of a month had changed my mind, realising that alternative treatments were not only ineffective but a multi-million pound industry out to take my money. Summers apparently decided against chemo; I know people who have done this and in every case their cancer was low grade and early stage - having looked into it they decided the benefits of chemo in their particular cases were not worth it. This is the sort of information you do not have about Summers' cancer - its stage and grade, how many lymph nodes affected - factors she will have taken into consideration before declining chemo and that her doctors will have taken into consideration before deciding how strongly to recommend chemo. I had stage 3 grade 3 breast cancer, with 13 lymph nodes involved (that's aggressive, late stage and likely to spread). I had surgery, chemo , radiotherapy and hormone therapy. My mother is a case of stage IV throat (oropharynx) cancer and has completed 9 rounds of chemotherapy and 40 rounds of radiotherpy? It's been said that Graviola kills cancer cells and is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy but has only been tested on rats. Do you think it might have similar results if used on humans?

A: If I was a rat and had cancer it would be my first choice of treatments, assuming the positive results being claimed were not produced just in a test tube. If I was a human with cancer and wanted to live, I'd see an oncologist as soon as possible because no substance like graviola has ever proven to be an effective tool against cancer other than on the internet where anyone can say anything and have zero real life proof to back up that statement. If graviola actually cured cancer in humans you can be assured that oncologists would be rushing to use it rather than letting their patients die of cancer.

A: Sorry to hear about your sister Eli. You will probably get responses for people suggesting some herbs and other stuff, I say most of them will be worthless, some might help. The problem is you'll never really know and waste money. I agree with lo_mcg to check out quackwatch. A lot of people associate 'alternative' with 'unproven', which is not necessarily right, it just means a different or new way. Many of todays treatments were considered once as alternative medicine. Mastectomy is an option of course if not done already, but there this cancer alternative treatment, which is in fact gene therapy for cancer. They do a combination treatment depending on status and type of cancer, including Biological Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Injections of Gendicine (Gene Therapy Drug). A: Budwig is usually a COMPLEMENTARY treatment for cancer patients if they decided to engage in complementary treatments. It's not meant to replace traditional treatements done by doctors. CAM procedures are created in hopes of improving the quality of life for a patient because often times treatment alone leaves a person miserable. There's lots of thoughts and ideas about how cancers should be treated, but the Budwig has not been proven as an actual CURE.
