Q: What causes the abdominal pain you get when you have diarrhea?
Everyone has felt those spells of sever sharp pain that precede a bout of diarrhea. What causes it, I wonder. I'm not looking for a treatment. I'm just wondering about the cause. Medical websites seem to focus on treatments and diagnosis. This is a science question more than a medical question.

A: It's the bacteria in your colon. Diarrhea is caused by bacteria, or, in most cases, "dirty" food. Bacteria, which alters the food that passes through your digestive tract, may or may not cause extreme, or mild, abdominal pain.

Q: What type of food causes light diarrhea?
I've been getting some diarrhea (nothing too horrible, but not normal bowel movements) for the past week or so. I admit that i've been eating too much bread with cream cheese and bologne, but i didn't think that would cause diarrhea. No plums or dried fruits, which i now cause diarrhea. So what other foods could it be?

A: Normal amounts of cheese won't cause diarrhea, but if you are consuming excessive amounts of milk products (like cream cheese), than can very likely cause your diarrhea. Try cutting back and see if you still get loose bowels.

Q: I get motion sickness that causes diarrhea. Any suggestions on what to take for this?
For most of my life I have had motion sickness, especially if I drive long distances. This causes me to get diarrhea instead of the typical nausea that motion sickness causes. I take Bonine for motion sickness, and it works sometimes, but it doesn't prevent diarrhea most of the time. Can you suggest another product or home remedy that I can take before I drive to prevent the diarrhea?

A: Ginger is great for motion sickness. I'm not sure why but it works.

Q: What causes diarrhea? (kinda gross question, but please keep reading)!?
I started really intense soccer tryouts on Monday morning. It was the most activity i've gotten all summer (pretty much). We do a LOT of running and conditioning, and by the end of the 2 hour practice, i have to go to the bathroom really bad and get diarrhea. Can the exercise cause the diarrhea? Or something else...

A: exercise help your bowels to move frequently and that's why you need to go to the bathroom alot. usually, it doesn't cause diarrhea but just normal waste. you only get diarrhea if you have an infection or are sick... oh well, think of it as a good thing. you're getting rid of icky waste that can make you bloated and getting rid of toxins in your system.

Q: What disease can humans catch from kittens that causes diarrhea?
I just bought kittens a couple of days ago. They're really unhealthy. They both have diarrhea, they're very skinny, and they refused to eat today. Anyway, since I bought them I've had diarrhea and I'm really thinking it may be from them. What kind of contagious disease could this be?

A: There's a list of diseases you can get from cats, call your local vet and find out. Everything from "Cat scratch fever" to Leukemia.

Q: What causes diarrhea, and how can you stop it?
I've had diarrhea for almost a week now!! Anything I eat has me running to the bathroom within 10 minutes.

A: Maybe you have developed a food intolerance? Or it's a bug, who knows. What I do know is that you should have gone to a doctor about 3 days ago. You shouldn't have diarrea for longer than say a weekend. Don't take any OTC things. Go to the doctor and they will make it stop by giving you the correct meds for whatever is wrong with you.

Q: What is in turkey that causes diarrhea in humans?
Whenever I eat turkey or turkey soup, I always get diarrhea and throw up (usually just in my mouth, not full blown barf). I can smell the turkey in my throat for a couple days after, no matter how many times I brush my teeth or eat something that doesn't at all taste like turkey. Am I the problem? Or is it the turkey?

A: I think it's you. I eat turkey and all I get is sleepy and full.

Q: Has anyone found that Glucerna causes diarrhea?
I am a diabetic with fibromyalgia. I started drinking Glucerna as a meal replacement, and found that I have had diarrhea almost every day since then.

A: It's the sugar substitute, most likely. Anything sugar free usually has sugar alcohols and they are notorious for causing gastro-intestinal issues. I steer clear of them.

Q: What causes diarrhea, and how do I make it go away?
I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary tonight, but I have bad gas, diarrhea, and I have to crap every 5 minutes. How do I make it stop? When I get it to stop how do I prevent it? Yeah, it might have been the yougurt I ate earlier. Usually doesn't bother me though. It's not too serious - not E. Coli or Salmonella or anything like that. I'm not going to the doctor, I can't afford it. It's just uncomfortable.

A: It could be caused by the ingestion of fecal-contaminated foods. You have to go to the doctor when you're feeling a little more stable (don't wanna stink up the clinic, do you?) Drink water as you are losing a lot of it right now. Avoid milk, other dairy products, spicy and fried foods till you are through. If the diarrhea is very bad, the doctor might suggest to avoid solid food altogether. Since you say you have to poop every 5 minutes maybe you should eat porridge only for now. And do not feel like you should let diarrhea run its course as some people believe. Try to get it treated, you don't have to suffer pointlessly. Prevent it by always washing your hands & nails especially before handling food. Do not touch your mouth and do not purchase food from unhygienic areas like street vendors (some not all).

Q: What causes diarrhea and an overall sick feeling?
My mom has been feeling like that today and yesterday and she's been saying she also has no appetite and just an overall ill feeling...what could it be and what should she do? she doesn't have a fever

A: Most likely influenza. The flu. Does she have a fever? Diarrhea can be bad if you don't drink enough water. It can dehydrate you. Tell her to drink plenty of water and rest. It's common for her not to have an appetite if she feels sick.

Q: How come sometimes the stomach flu causes diarrhea and other times it causes vomiting?
What determines which end it will come out of?

A: Viruses are unpredictable and certainly in any particular person they act differently. The virus mutations may also result in odd results. What determines where it comes out is determined by the virus invading the body. Neither end is good.

Q: What are some possible causes of nauseousness and diarrhea?
So I have been feeling nauseous and have had diarrhea since Friday. It seems like it's getting steadily worse. Possible causes for this? Thanks in advance!

A: Are you on any kind of medicines? I have extremely sever acid reflux and they put me nexium for it. After that i got sever diarrhea and headaches and nausia. I lived with this for about two years with the diagioniosis of irritable bowel syndrom, that was until they found out it was all side effects of the Nexuim. But it could just be IBS, and in that case you will need to change your diet.

Q: What are the causes of diarrhea in a dog?
He is a 7 month old lab . Got neutered 2 weeks ago. We did buy a new bag of puppy food about a week ago. Same kind as before,we didn't change brands. He has had diarrhea for 3 days now.

A: Probably something he ate. As long as he is alert and active it is something you can handle at home. Feed him a soft diet of room temp. cottage cheese or yogurt with rice in small meals 3 times a day for a day or two and slowly switch back to his regular food. This will restore the normal flora in his digestive tract. If he becomes listless or any other symptoms take him to the vet.

Q: what causes diarrhea without stomach pain?
I suddenly had it earlier but my stomach didn't hurt at all. I have also had a sore throat virus since 2 days ago. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not.

A: Apple juice. Any juices really. Different foods. Change of eating habits. More liquids than solids. Plenty of possibilities.

Q: What causes chronic diarrhea and constipation?
I go from one extreme to the other sometimes in a matter of a few days and suffer a lot when I have diarrhea. This is a honest question and I can do without smart mouthed answers!.

A: Celiac Disease commonly causes these types of problems. Celiac Disease is quite common, but is rarely diagnosed by medical doctors because it is a nutritional disorder. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. It is caused by an allergic reaction to the proteins in wheat, rye and barley called glutens/gliadins. The only treatment is total avoidance of glutens and gliadins in the diet. Other possible causes for your symptoms include: Other food allergies (e.g. dairy) Intestinal Dysbiosis Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Other Autoimmune diseases of the gut such as Crohn's disease Hypochlorhydria (too little stomach acid for proper digestion) Heavy metal toxicities And, cancer Note: IBS - Irritable Bowel Disease is NOT a diagnosis - it is a LABEL given to patients (disguised as a diagnosis) when the doctor cannot determine the cause of the bowel-related symptoms. Best wishes and good luck.
