Q: What are the best remedies for Gout?
I would like to know what are the best remedies for gout? Not involving drugs. My other half suffers from gout in his leg and sometimes ends up limping.

A: Gout is a common type of arthritis that occurs when an excessive amount of uric acid in the blood, tissues and urine crystallizes in the joints. People who have gout are unable to break down and excrete uric acid, a byproduct of digesting certain foods. It usually comes on suddenly, and can last from a few hours to several days. It can cause extremely sore toes or other areas of the foot, and because it frequently manifests itself in the big toe, it is also known as "gouty big toe". Another name is "gouty arthritis". Gout can also appear in an ear, heel of the hand, small hand joints, ankles, knees, elbows, or wrists with inflammation, swelling and intense pain from the buildup of uric acid crystals. Uric acid is the end product of the metabolism of a class of chemicals known as purines. In people with gout, the body does not have enough of the digestive enzyme uricase, and, as a result, uric acid builds up and crystallizes. Left uncontrolled, excessive excretion of uric acid in the urine can lead to the development of painful kidney stones, kidney disease, and even kidney failure. Gout is associated with high blood pressure, kidney disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and uric acid kidney stones. It is estimated that up to 2 million people have gout. Between 75-90% of gout sufferers are middle-aged males and 25% have family members with it. In women, uric acid starts building up after menopause, quite possibly due to the drop in estrogen. Remedies Folk Alfalfa is a good source of minerals and other nutrients that help reduce serum uric acid. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) Add some rose hips to vinegar and boil; dab on affected area. You may need to apply this mixture several times a day for a few weeks. The vinegar changes the blood pH so that the crystals will go into solution and be excreted. • Mix two teaspoons each of apple cider vinegar and raw honey in a glass of water and drink at mealtime. • Soak the foot in a mixture of 1/2 cup of ACV and three cups of hot water. Bilberry is high in anthocyanosides and flavonoids, which are helpful in overcoming gout. Black cherry juice Get some natural, concentrated black cherry juice and drink several tablespoons of the concentrate daily. You should expect relief in 48 hours. Black cohash moderates blood acidity. Blueberries are high in anti-inflammatory compounds called anthocyanins, which help ease the pain of gout. Buchu tea helps dissolve and flush out uric acid crystals. Castor oil packs Soak a piece of white flannel in warm castor oil, wring it out and place over the affected area; cover with plastic wrap and apply a heating pad. Do this for one hour twice daily. Cayenne pepper Boil one tablespoon of pepper in 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water and dab onto the painful joint. • Mix cayenne with enough wintergreen oil to make a paste and apply to the affected area. Celery seeds These seeds are quite effective in relieving gout by eliminating uric acid from the body. According to James Duke, Ph.D., a medical botanist formerly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, celery seeds contain about twenty different anti-inflammatory agents. Although there is little scientific research on celery seeds, according to Kerry Bone, a leading expert on herbal remedies in Australia, "it (sic) works brilliantly in patients." Recommended dosage is 500 mg (standardized to 450 mg of celery seed extract) 2x daily. Note: This remedy is not to be used by pregnant women because of its diuretic effect and the fact that it can encourage uterine contractions, or those with kidney disease because of its potential diuretic effect and that the plant's oils can worsen kidney inflammation. • Cook a tablespoon of celery seeds in two cups of water until they are soft; strain and drink 1/2 cup four times a day. Charcoal Take 1/2 -1 teaspoon of activated charcoal daily. • Make a poultice using cup of activated charcoal, 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed and warm water to draw out the toxins. Cherries If you are lucky enough to have fresh cherries, eating 6-8 cherries daily will relieve the symptoms of gout. This remedy was reported in 1950 by Dr. Ludwig W. Blau who cured his own gout. Frozen and canned cherries may also be used. When you feel an attack coming on, eat 20-30 cherries immediately. Cherries are rich in compounds that prevent the destruction of collagen, which the body uses to form connective tissue. The connective tissue is damaged by gout. Cherries also have an enzyme that neutralizes uric acid and are high in anthocyanins which have high antioxidant properties as well as anti-inflammatory action. For greatest effectiveness eat them between meals. Devil's claw reduces uric acid levels and is a natural cleansing agent for toxic impurities. Take 400 mg of the dried extract 3x a day for as long as desired. DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) is very effective in relieving pain and swelling caused by inflammation. It helps dissolve crystalline deposits. Garlic Eat several cloves of raw garlic daily. Mince the garlic and add it to black cherry juice for a potent remedy. Ginger Put 1/3 cup of ground ginger (buy in bulk to keep the cost down) in a bathtub of water and soak for 30 minutes. This will cause you to sweat (a good thing) which will help eliminate the uric acid from your tissues. When you are finished the bath be sure to rinse off thoroughly, as the ginger can cause skin irritation if it dries on your skin. Grapes are high in alkalines which lessen the acidity of uric acid and aid in its elimination from the body. Hawthorn is high in anthocyanosides and flavonoids, which are helpful in overcoming gout. Hydrangea is an anti-inflammatory. Ice Apply an ice pack for ten minutes, then alternate with a moist hot-towel compress, to soothe and numb the pain. Mullein Soak mullein leaves in a hot vinegar/water mixture. Pack the leaves on the affected area. Nettle contains alkaloids which neutralize uric acid. Parsley acts as a natural diuretic. Quercetin The flavonoid quercetin inhibits uric acid production in a similar fashion to commonly prescribed drugs for gout. Take 1000 mg of quercetin along with 1,000-1,500 mg of the enzyme bromelain (to enhance absorption) two to three times daily between meals. Bromelain also help reduce the inflammation. Red clover has traditionally been one of the standard remedies for gout, as well as removing toxins from the body, and treating psoriasis, eczema, and hot flashes. Studies have shown that red clover may thin the blood, so it should not be used by patients who are also taking an anticoagulant medication. While red clover is high in isoflavones, the reason it is helpful in treating gout has not been studied. Saffron neutralizes uric acid buildup. Spearmint Make a poultice of spearmint leaves and wrap the affected area. Strawberries Eating a cup of strawberries with each meal should bring quick relief. They neutralize uric acid. Yarrow Make a tea by using equal parts of yarrow and stinging nettles; strain, cool and drink several cups a day. Prevention • One of the best ways to prevent gout is to drink at least 6-8 eight ounce glasses of water, fresh juices or herb tea daily, especially at the first signs of gout. This will keep your urine diluted and will help your body excrete uric acid and prevent crystals from forming. • Eat foods high in potassium, as mentioned above. • Eating generous amounts of other fruits and vegetables helps keep uric acid crystals in solution. • Take the flavonoid quercetin - see below under Folk Remedies. This should be part of your permanent gout-prevention diet. • Having sex prevents men from getting gout. It seems that increased sexual activity reduces uric acid levels in fertile men. • Lemon juice prevents gout attacks by stimulating the formation of calcium carbonate in the body. Calcium carbonate neutralizes acids in the body, including uric acid that triggers gout attacks. After each meal drink the juice of one freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of lukewarm water. To get more juice out of the lemon, bring it to room temperature, then roll it around on the counter with the palm of your hand. • Taking 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with meals will prevent gout attacks. This will help alkalize the body. • Keep the leg elevated. • A high fiber diet also aids in the elimination of uric acid by absorbing bile acids formed in the liver. These bile acids can act as a precursor to uric acid. Foods and Other Things to Avoid • Meat: organ meats, offal, meat extracts, veal, bacon, sweetbreads, meat gravies and broths, consommé/bullion • Poultry: turkey, goose • Seafood: salmon, mackerel, trout, cod, herring, sardines, anchovies, mussels, crab, shrimp • Vegetables: peas, beans, lentils, asparagus, mushrooms, cooked spinach, rhubarb, cauliflower • Yeast products: baked goods, beer • Alcohol - it increases the production of uric acid and inhibits its excretion by the kidneys • Coffee - it accelerates the breakdown of protein into uric acid • All fried foods - they cause a depletion of vitamin E, which can cause uric acid to rise • Cream and ice cream • Rich desserts • Spices • Pastries • Simple sugars, simple carbohydrates and saturated fats - they increase your body's production of uric acid and impair your kidneys' ability to get rid of it. Eliminate fructose (found in food and drinks, like sodas) • White flour • Aspirin can raise uric acid levels. If you need to use pain killers, only use ones with ibuprofen. • Oatmeal • Whole grains • Caffeine - it impairs kidney function, which is needed to get uric acid out of the body. HOPE THAT HELPS!

Q: Are there any home remedies for gout?
My dad has gout really bad in his feet. He can't hardly walk anymore because of it. I would really like to try to help him find something to help cure it, other than taking medication the doctor subscribed him. Does anybody know of any 'home remedies' that would help him?

A: None-medicine things to try: drink tons of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight daily. Eat lots of sour dairy: sour cream, cottage cheese, plain yogurt in smoothies mixes with orange juice, pineapple, frozen berries. Avoid beer, coffee, organ meats, high fructose corn syrup. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, veggies being potatoes, corn, carrots, cabbage, avoid the dark green veggies. For more check out www.best-gout-remedies.com. Good luck to you and your dad!

Q: Can anyone suggest some herbal remedies for gout?
My husband has been prescribed with medication for gout, which is causing side effects and doesn't seem to be clearing the problem up Many Thanks in advance.

A: Hi Rosie, Some of the problems related to conventional medications for GOUT are Pain relievers such as Tylenol or other more potent analgesics are used to manage pain. Anti-inflammatory agents such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are used to decrease joint inflammation, but common side effects of NSAIDS include irritation of the gastrointestinal system, stomach ulcers and intestinal problems , and even intestinal bleeding. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, given in short courses, are powerful anti-inflammatory agents for treating acute gout; yet long-term chronic use of corticosteroids is discouraged because of serious long-term side effects. Probenecid (Benemid) and sulfinpyrazone (Anturane) are medications that are commonly used to decrease uric acid blood levels by increasing the excretion of uric acid into the urine. Since these drugs can cause kidney stones patients with a history of kidney stones should seek other options. Allopurinol (Zyloprim) lowers the blood uric acid level by preventing uric acid production, but medication is used with caution in patients with poor kidney function, as they are at a particular risk of developing side effects, including rash and liver damage. Herbal and homeopathic remedies have been used for centuries to treat a number of conditions, including gout. Harpagophytum procumbens (indigenous to the Kalahari Desert and is exclusive to Africa) has been used for many years to promote joint health and stability. Glucosamine sulphate has been approved for the promotion of joint and cartilage health in more than 70 countries throughout the world, while Boswellia serata extracts address swelling joints, pain and tender tissues naturally, without side effects. Check out these 2 hugely popular remedies (one of which is specific for gout) and see if that helps. http://www.healthherbsandnutrition.com/products/goutgone.htm and http://www.healthherbsandnutrition.com/products/jointeaseplus.htm Hope all this helped Good Luck!

Q: I am looking for home remedies for gout and ways to prevent it from getting worse once it flares up.?
My diet is not rich in meat or shellfish and I get this periodically. The medication prescribed by the doctor did not help much. I need something that will ease the symptoms once they start. I've seen ads for remedies on the internet but am skeptical about them. Has anyone experienced this and found something that will help?

A: Of course gout is caused by crystals formed by too high of uric acid levels. It is basically a form of Arthritis. Change it diet will not always help, due to the fact some people just have high uric acid levels normally. Here are some things that can help ease the symptoms, but remember not everything works for everyone. 1. Cherry Extract - You can get this at most health food stores. 2. Celery Seed Extract - Put in warm water as a tea. 3. Ibuprofen - Anti Inflammatory will help break up the crystals, but BE CAREFUL, as NSAIDS can cause liver damage, and stomach problems if you take too much. 4. Drink plenty of water. 5. Put an ice pack on the effective area to draw out the heat. The only thing that I've found that the doctor could give me was Indocin. It is an anti-inflammatory that worked very well. I've taken Cherry Extract daily for 2 years, and I've not had an attack since. Maybe that could help you as well. Good Luck.

Q: what might be some medical and or natural remedies for gout?
yonger brother has this problem, sounds pretty sore, want to help, what might be some remedies to help relieve the pain, thankyou

A: Yes, gout is madness in the joint. The testing takes a really long time, especially if you are in pain. Cure 1: Cherry juice, drink it lots. Drink lots of water. Cure 2: Wrap affected area in warm cabbage leaves as poultice. Cure 3: To prevent, eat celery every day. Cure 4: Avoid purines (protiens in red meats, meat broths, beans, chick peas).

Q: What are some natural remedies for gout?
I have it in one knee and both big toes. I am fit and run 20-25 miles per week and it has not affected this yet but I want to stop it early. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: I had bad gout in my big toes and I used to run 50 - 60 miles a week. It didn't really impair me but it was a nuisance and I also used to get severe leg cramps. They both have gone away. I was always partly vegetarian but when I became a complete vegetarian and focused on raw foods that is what has apparently cured both. I also think drinking alcohol might have been a factor because I have largely cut back on that also, though I did not drink excessively and it was mainly beer. I also greatly increased my Hatha yoga sessions. So perhaps that played a part also. I have also moved to a much hotter country and so have been drinking much more water, much more liquids. Perhaps that is a factor also. But it was only when I read your question that I realized that my gout and leg cramps have completely and permanently gone away!

Q: What are some effective home remedies for gout?
My fiance's right big toe had a flair up about 8 years ago and now he is complaining of the same pain associated with that diagnosis, just curious as to what I can do for him that will have an immediate affect?

A: The cherry juice could work but try tart cherry juice if that doesn't do the trick. Gout comes from excessive uric acid in the body. Drinking 6-8 glasses of distilled water will help eliminate uric acid more efficient. Raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar removes uric acid. Drink 3 glasses of apple juice with a tablespoon of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar and a dash of cinnamon three times a day. Throw out your table salt and switch to unrefined sea salt. This could fix you up fast. I would take soak my foot in warm water with 2 cups of regular store bought apple cider vinegar and add cayenne and or rose hip oil. Unrefined sea salt an excellent way to help with gout. http://curezone.com/foods/saltcure.asp... Tart Cherry juice will help with pain if you can get some from a health food store. MSM and glucosamine are good anti-inflammatory supplements. Fast from red meat and dairy until the gout clears.

Q: Does anyone have any home remedies for gout?
My brother-in-law just told me he has gout. It's particles that get in your bones and he said the pain is just terrible. I asked what do the Doctors say. They can't do much for him. He is going to be 67 this month. He's pretty active and a busy guy. I asked him if he takes calcium. Would that help him? He described it almost like major arthritis pain, but just varies of where the pain will occur on his body. Any ideas out there for him, please.

A: Try Heroin, I hear it is the BEST pain killer evah!!

Q: Are there any natural or herbal remedies for Gout?
Anything that is not prescription since my husband refuses to see a doctor.

A: Gout is a painful way to go through life, I'm a fellow gout sufferer. The things that really helped me get through an attack are indomethacine, colchicine. Those are both scripts from a doctor. Would like to think your hub could see his way to get relief from modern medicine. Also, allopurinol in a script will help remove uric acid from the system. This has helped me too. I take it every day, it's insanely inexpensive, and it has no side effects. Allopurinol is probably most important for me to stay away from gout. Everything that's been said above are good non-prescription things to do if one gets gout. Drink an oz of water for every 2 lbs of body weight every day. Stay away from high fructose corn syrup. I had to give up beer almost completely *whimper* and that was very difficult for me. Just a thought: your hub is willing to listen to advice from strangers on health issues, but not a doctor? I understand completely, just because a doctor says do this or don't do that, doesn't make it 100% correct all the time. But if the hub cares about his health, he needs to open up a bit. Another couple of items that help me: celery seed pills, they may help the liver not create so much uric acid. And, mix 1/2 tsp of baking soda in 12 oz of water and sip on that, helps to make the body more alkaline (opposite of acidic) and it may help get rid of the uric acid. As you can probably tell by now, two things are very important: don't add extra uric acid (purines) to the body, and help the body get rid of the extra uric acid. One last thing, on the red wine comment: red wine is probably the ONLY alcohol that a gout sufferer can drink, as long as it's in moderation. Red wine is ok. It's the beer and hard alcohol that is really bad. Good luck to you and your hub!

Q: Are there any home remedies for gout in the foot?
I know a person that cant afford the medicine needed.I cant at this time either.

A: You don't need a stocking, or prescription medicine to control the gout in your foot. Some people are more susceptible to gout than others, and to control it and stop it coming back all the time (because you won't be able to get rid of it forever) you need to make some changes to your diet. The best things you can do right now are stop eating red meat, cutting your servings of white meat down to once a day in small amounts, upping your intake of water, and introducing a truckload of cherries to your diet. You've got to keep hydrated at all times as this will slow the crystallization of the uric acid in your body which is causing the pain and swelling. The cherries (eat them raw or drink lots of 100% cherry juice) will help dissipate the uric acid from your body. Check out the link below for more information and a full on cookbook for gout sufferers. Hope that helps.

Q: Natural remedies for the treatment and prevention of "GOUT"?
I have just been diagnosed with gout and would like to know of some good natural remedies. I know that drinking 12 glasses of water to continue flushing the system is supposed to help along with some dietary changes. What about Total Cleanse- Uric Acid or other products? Are there any independent research organizations, not sponsored by product producers/sellers that have good data?

A: The only way really is to eat a completely alkaline diet,I have being eating it for a year now ,I had very high levels of uric acid in my blood which are now normal. As a consequence of this I have lost 4 stone without even trying ,good luck.

Q: Any Natural/home remedies for gout?
My husband has recently developed gout and does not have insurance. So..he has changed his diet and is trying to make the appropriate changes. But he is still in a LOT of pain. Does anyone know any natural remedies he can try? Thank you!

A: I had dozens of gout attacks and they are so frickin painful that I had to get drug for them, the only one I take but not on a regular basis. I wind up taking way, way less than a few pills a month by taking one or two at the start of an attack. The attacks come fairly infrequently between them.. I refused the allopurinol and rarely take the anti-inflammatories as they caused my mom's kidneys to be destroyed and she wound up on dialysis but the pain is so great sometimes I had to..it feels like someone repeatedly hit my foot with a hammer or cut it up with razors or something. I have found that by taking one or at most two pills if it does not leave of Colchicine that so far it goes away in a day or so. The prescription has 30 pills so it lasts a long time as one has breaks between attacks and if one or two can improve or fix it, it could last quite a while..mine have unlike the pills they want you to take daily Interestingly, it is made from a plant the seeds of the autumn crocus or meadow saffron which was first used for gout in 1810 but I do not know how they altered it. http://arthritis.about.com/od/colchicine/a/gout_medication.htm luckily it has been several months since I had an attacks as I started eating better I guess. I would recommend he make a single trip to a doctor who will write several refills and have it on hand just in case of severe pain as a fellow suffer Now As far as natural things, he might try the hallelujah diet which is mostly mostly raw vegan diet that has helped others and will help many health problems here are some testimonials http://www.hacres.com/testimonies/testimonies.asp?strterm1=gout&strterm2=&submit1=Search Dr walker in his book on vegetable and fruit juices recommend the following fresh juice formulas for gout in addition to sour cherry juice and cherries of all types which is the standard advice on gout 1 carrot - 10 oz and spinach 6 oz 2 carrot 7 oz celery 4 oz parsley 2 oz and spinach 3 oz 3 carrot 10 oz beet 3 oz and cuke 3 0z 4 carrot 11 oz beet 3 oz coconut 2 oz also helpful for gout he says (the top four (1-4) are most important) are: 5 spinach juice 6 carrot 9 oz celery 5 oz and parsley 2 oz 7 carrot 12 oz and parsley 4 oz these are the proportions for a single glass the more glasses you do the better a drink them within 15 minutes or the enzymes dissipate..do not store in refrig but make fresh each time b..going somewhere like aldis you can get very cheap produce..even if it is not organic if the pulp (fiber) is not eaten no pesticides etc will be in the juice as they are only in the plant fibers and juicing crushes the fibers and releases the unpoisoned part. c chew the juice http://articles.herballegacy.com/gout/ we see all heart's suggestions there at the top of the list..celery seed extract.. (make this into a tincture as it will last many years as follows) take celery seeds and add 80 proof vodka and have it half celery seeds and half vodka when it settle..shake several times a day in two weeks strain through a cheesecloth or cloth and put in a dark colored bottle ( tincture bottle with an eyedropper top would be best like this type http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dtincture%2Bbottle%26b%3D41%26ni%3D20%26ei%3DUTF-8%26pstart%3D1%26fr%3Dytff1-%26fr2%3Dtab-web&w=78&h=218&imgurl=www.hgpills.com%2Fmisc_images%2Fhodia_tincture.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hgpills.com%2Fdefault.cfm&size=5k&name=hodia+tincture+j...&p=tincture+bottle&oid=6587051cb6f5d654&fr2=tab-web&no=44&tt=332&b=41&ni=20&sigr=112m9lbgf&sigi=11elr406i&sigb=13hvne7jt ) or in a clear glass bottle in a paper bag (light deteriorates it) and label it then take 60 drops (2 dropperfuls) 3-5 times a day

Q: what do you think the most best remedies for gout?
I have gout and arthitis it is pain full what are some cheap or good ways to help the best...

A: Don't eat the food that you think brought the gout on. Mine was both asparagus and venison. I cannot eat either or I'm in terrible pain. Eating a few cherries a day is suppose to keep the gout away. Hope this helps.
