Q: How can I relieve pain from my lower back and knees?
After walking for 15-30 minutes+ I experience pain in my lower back and knees. Are there any exercises I can be doing to relieve this pain? I have shoe inserts for lower back pain but they don't seem to be working.

A: As long as you have been to a dr and have ruled out any serious issues, then strengthening your core muscles will do wonders to ease your back pain. Your core muscles are the muscles in your torso and abs that support your spine. By having strong core muscles, they hold your spine in better alignment; allowing you to walk, without pain. As far as the pain in your knees it could be weakness that you need to build strength, or it could be the way you walk. You may not be walking/stepping properly so that overtime, the way you walk could be putting pressure on your joints and causing pain. Try doing an internet search for proper walking techniques and try to incorporate those into your walks. I have been wearing skecher shape-ups for a few months and I really like them; my lower back doesnt hurt now when i wear them for walks or even grocery shopping. But before you go and spend $100 on a potential "cure" I would try strenghening the core, making sure there is no physical problem, and making sure you are walking properly with proper alignment.

Q: I have constant lower back pain after standing for more than thirty minutes. What should I do?
I go to concerts frequently, and after about thirty minutes of standing my lower back is radiating with pain. I can always take Advil for pain relief, but is there anything else I can do? Should I wear any specific type of shoe? Thanks for your advice!

A: Most common cause of lower back pain is compression on the lower discs. Decompression could work. Decompression by using an inversion table or those expensive decompression tables Doctor's use. Decompression therapy stretches your spine to relieve some of the pressure. Decompression therapy can help to relieve lower back pain but it is always best to find the cause and eliminate it. I don't know what your special circumstances are but I suffered from lower back pain a long time until I determined it was due to my bed. Hard to believe I know. If you find your back pain is sharp when you first get out of bed in the morning the cause could very well be your bed. I documented my experiences with lower back and how I solved it with a memory foam bed. Visit the site below for more detailed information. It is not really a commercial site, (other than adsense that pays my monthly hosting fees) but I couldn't come up with a good domain name because so many using the words 'memory foam' were taken,

Q: How do I get rid of temporary lower back pain?
My lower back has been hurting for about a week now. How do I get rid of the pain without having to go to the chiropractor? I've been taking OTC back pain relievers, and they seem to help a little bit. Do you have any alternatives. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

A: Actually pain relievers will only give you temporary relief at most. If you have had pain for a week, the ice/heat will seldom work as it is more effective in those first 48 hours. What you need to do is stretch a few muscles as they are the likely source of most of your pain, and also get your joints moving. You need to be able to work out what is wrong though or you may target the wrong areas. If you wish click the link below my name for a free diagnostic tool you can use o work out where your back pain comes from. But then you need to stretch as this should help. even once the pain has eased, you still need to work on your back to make sure the pain doesn't come back. At the doctor yesterday they gave me two vaccines. One was a tetanus booster, and the other was a new one out for meningitis. A: One would not expect to have lower back pain following vaccination. I suspect that your pain was just coincidence.

Q: Sever lower back pain after a night of laxatives what can I do now?
I was severely constipated, I am chronically constipated and the doctor took an xray last week and I go for a follow up next week. Anyway yesterday the pain got too bad and I tried several types of laxatives. About 1:00 am I finally was relieved of my condition and made several trips the bathroom. Now I am in severe pain in my lower back just above the buttocks area and the pain is on both sides. Pain laying down, more pain if I try to get up, pain while sitting up. It is a constant strain sharp pain that hurts more when I move and it is only in the lower back area. Yesterday it was my back and stomach that hurt, now after being relieved it is just the back. Anyone ever experience this trouble and what worked for you to first get out of pain? What did you do to prevent from being chronically constipated to get to this point? I have tried increasing fiber, water, and exercise with little results.

A: My daughter has the same problem. She has tried all sorts of things (fiber, etc.), but to no avail. She went to an herbalist and they mixed up some herbs for her. They seem to be the only thing that will help her. Evidently she has a very sluggish colon, though she had a colostomy and they said she was fine. Just keep trying by drinking a large glass of water when you first get up and as much as you can through the day. Fresh fruits and raw veggies, too. Cut back on the amount of sugar that you consume because I've heard that it can cause constipation, too. You probably irritated your colon by the laxatives. Try to eat something soft that won't keep it irritated. Exercise helps, too. If nothing else, try to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Otherwise, good luck.
