Q: parkinsons symptoms or dementia?
my grandfather was diagnosed with parkinsons 2 yrs ago and he has been doing as well as expected. he has a slight tremor with his hands and shuffles alittle when he walks but the meds seem to be working. now last weekend on friday grandma said that grandpa was acting weird. he couldn't remember how to us the cell phone, he seemed confused , he almost went off the road while driving. when grandma asked the dr about it he said "well he seems fine now" is this symptoms of parkinsons? anyone heard of something like this happening???

A: Slowness of thoughts, confusion and weak memory may be part of Parkinsonism. If otherwise he is improving, these things will also show improvement. He should always be accompanied. Good luck!

Q: What is parkinsons disease and what are its symptoms?

A: Parkinson's disease is a common, chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system that produces movement disorders and changes in cognition and mood. Its hallmarks include a pill-rolling tremor of the hands, muscular rigidity, loss of facial expression, difficulty initiating movements (bradykinesia), and gait disturbances (esp. shuffling gait, festination, and sometimes difficulty initiating forward movements). Parkinson's disease (PD) is usually found in people over the age of 65. Its underlying cause is not known. Although PD often clusters in families, whether this is the result of genetics or of exposure to common precipitating agents (viruses, toxins) is uncertain. In the U.S. about one and a half million people have Parkinson disease. Symptoms Most patients report gradual onset of aching, fatigue, or malaise, followed by evidence of a tremor in one or more extremities, typically a hand when it is at rest. Other common symptoms include difficulty getting up from a chair or turning over in bed; a change in vocal quality (a softer, less audible voice); shuffling gait that becomes faster after a few steps (festination); and a stooped posture. As the years pass, frequent falls may occur. Occasionally a tendency to fall backward (retropulsion) replaces festination. Facial expressiveness may diminish, and the handwriting may become smaller or more cramped (micrographia).

Q: I'm trying to find acupunture to help some of my dad's symptoms of Parkinsons.?
My neighbor said there is an acupuncture practice where all of the needles go into the ears and that it isn't done in the US. She said it isn't the typical acupuncture that is done for illnesses.

A: In most states, acupuncture is a licensed health care profession. In addition to a license from the state, Acupuncturists must have at least master's level training in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture is most well known in this country for treating pain, but it is a complete system of medicine. Acupuncture can be very beneficial in treating the effects of Parkinson's. Ear acupuncture is often used alone as treatment for addiction withdrawal. Your neighbor is probably thinking of a clinic that specializes in this. Depending on your location, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a helpful acupuncturist near you. Check www.acupuncturetoday.com or www.acufinder.com for listings.

Q: are stealing and compulsive gambling symptoms of parkinsons disease?

A: I hope your not serious. I think they ARE symptoms of poor morals, though.

Q: what r the early symptoms of parkinsons?

A: It is often difficult to pinpoint when a person with Parkinson's first began showing signs and symptoms of the disease. Many people vividly recall when they first noticed their tremor, but through close questioning, the physician often finds that subtle signs of the disease were present even before the tremor became noticeable. The following are listed some of the early signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease: * Change in facial expression (staring, lack of blinking) * Failure to swing one arm when walking * Flexion (stooped) posture * "Frozen" painful shoulder * Limping or dragging of one leg * Numbness, tingling, achiness or discomfort of the neck or limbs * Softness of the voice * Subjective sensation of internal trembling * Resting tremor

Q: what is parkinsons, its symptoms?

A: Parkinson's disease develops gradually, often starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson's disease, the disorder also commonly causes a slowing or freezing of movement. Friends and family may notice that your face shows little or no expression and your arms don't swing when you walk. Speech often becomes soft and mumbling. Parkinson's symptoms tend to worsen as the disease progresses. While there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, many different types of medicines can treat its symptoms. In some cases, your doctor may suggest surgery.

Q: what is parkinsons disease what are the symptoms?

A: Parkinson's disease (also known as Parkinson disease or PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills and speech. Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement (bradykinesia), and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement (akinesia). The primary symptoms are the results of excessive muscle contraction, normally caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the brain. Secondary symptoms may include high level cognitive dysfunction and subtle language problems. PD is both chronic and progressive. PD is the most common cause of parkinsonism, a group of similar symptoms. PD is also called "primary parkinsonism" or "idiopathic PD" ("idiopathic" meaning of no known cause). While most forms of parkinsonism are idiopathic, there are some cases where the symptoms may result from toxicity, drugs, genetic mutation, head trauma, or other medical disorders. Parkinson disease affects movement (motor symptoms). Typical other symptoms include disorders of mood, behavior, thinking, and sensation (non-motor symptoms). Individual patients' symptoms may be quite dissimilar; progression is also distinctly individual

A: I'm really sorry to hear all of your symptoms. Although the symptoms of PD and MS often sound very similar and manifest in different people at different times, this sounds more like Multiple Sclerosis especially because of the nature of your vision problem which could be nystagmus. This is not to say that you can't have vision issues with Parkinson's Disease, you can and my husband has them. First check MS, an autoimmune disease which has also been called an "inflammatory demyelinating condition." Something about your description of the sudden limb pains sounds more like MS than PD. And your symptoms seem to match: vision co-ordination strength sensation speech and swallowing bladder control sexuality cognitive function Take a look at WebMD which gets right to the point: http://www.webmd.com/multiple-sclerosis/guide/multiple-sclerosis-symptoms-types Next you can compare your symptoms to Parkinson's Disease. Certainly your urinary issues sound like those of a PWP but they also fit other conditions as well. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/parkinsons_disease/parkinsons_disease.htm Yes, stiff neck is an early symptom of PD - mostly in women. Check the Mayo Clinic site for symptoms which parallel yours: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/multiple-sclerosis/DS00188/DSECTION=symptoms You appear to have sudden drops in blood pressure which can become dangerous if left untreated. Not knowing where in NJ you reside, I have included a general link to free clinics in and around the New Jersy area. You need to find one closest to you that offers more than STD services and go there immediately. Your symptoms require attention, diagnosis and treatment. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7GGLC_en&num=100&newwindow=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=free+clinics+new+jersey&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&view=text&ei=iAFaSrDTDYTCNarcvUI&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=more-results&resnum=1 Ok, about Lyme Disease. You might have been bitten and not even have been aware. You might not have noticed a bite on your back, for example. I know people who were diagnosed with Parkinson's but actually had Lyme Disease which is certainly not treated the same way. Although the superficial condition can clear, the symptoms and the body's reaction remain. If you had friend with that exposure, you could had had it too but with a different reaction. http://arthritis.webmd.com/tc/lyme-disease-symptoms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease I just found this MS diet website, I have no idea about the value here, but adjusting your diet might be the only treatment you can afford ... once you have had a diagnosis. http://www.paleodiet.com/ms/ You can check out the dietary content of fruits and vegetables here in order to include or rule out: http://parkinsonsfocustoday.blogspot.com/2009/06/more-food-for-parkinsons-disease.html In both PD and MS, it is important to supplement with antioxidants. That can be done through nutritional supplements which you buy or careful attention to diet: http://www.mothernature.com/Library/bookshelf/Books/10/88.cfm and at links here for MS: http://curezone.com/diseases/ms/ I'm not sure that a physician can diagnose you online. Please check the free clinic link and make an appointment. You need to be seen in person. Type up your list of symptoms - essentially your question here in full. Take two copies with you so that you can both be on the same page. You can reach me through Yahoo Answers or the site below. Best wishes.

Q: symptoms of parkinsons?

A: Hope this helps :) They tremble involuntarily. They find their muscles become rigid and stiff, and they lose their ability to make rapid, spontaneous movements. They walk in a recognizable manner, with a typical gait in which the body is bent or flexed. They may have difficulty maintaining their balance. visit the source for more information :)

Q: what are the symptoms for pakinson´s disease?
Can someone tell me the symptoms of Parkinson's disease? Explain everything, as i don´t understand all the medical words. what are the early symptons and what are the ordinary symptons of the parkinsons disease. I will write my experience in the additional info, when a few answers are in.

A: Slowness of movement Tremors, shaking Stiffness of muscles

Q: Symptoms are like that of Parkinsons?
My hands shake, but my motor skills aren't affected at all. The only thing that really upsets me is this noticable shaking that my hands do when I'm trying to do something, like open a can. I don't have any stiff or painful joints, just this embarrassing shaking. Does anyone else have this... and if so.... how do you cope? I've had this for about 15 years, and it's something I deal with every day, and it's embarrassing. My husband is so wonderful about it, but I was wondering if anyone else's doctor has suggested any type of treatment (if there is any). My doctor just says that "some people get this."

A: I think it might be called "intentional tremor" Means when you are attempting to manipulate something like the can opener you get the shakes. I haven't heard of any treatments. Most patients I've seen (as a nurse in a hospital setting) either put down w/e they are holding, wait a few seconds, and pick it up again. Some just keep on going without letting it bother them. Some cuss out their hands and get on with it. Nothing to be embarrassed about, despite its name, you aren't doing it on purpose.

Q: How are Huntingtons and Parkinsons alike and how are they different?
And what are some symptoms that one has and the other doesnt?

A: Huntingotn's is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder. Parkinson's is also a neurodegenerative disorder but not all cases are genetic, most are idiopathic and some cases are a result of head trauma. HD becomes noticeable in middle age (35-45) but can appear at any age. PD tends to appear in older people. An HD early symptom is random, uncontrollable jerky movement. In HD this is seen as fine hand tremor. With HD there is pyschomotor impairment, cognitive impairment, neuropsychiatric symptoms (the cognitive problems often end in dementia), sleep disorder, rigid abnormal posturing. With PD there are also neuropsychiatric symptoms (can often lead to dementia), sleep disorder, impaired perception, dysfunction of the autonomic system, GI dysfunctions and ophthalmological dysfunctions due to the neuropathology of the disease.
