Q: skin condition?
does anyone have any information on the skin condition kiratosis pilaris? what exactly is it? i know i have it because thats what the doctor said and i have special lotion for it and stuff but i dont understand exactly how it happens and how the bumps form from it. will anyone who knows please explain?

A: Yes, I have a moderate to severe case of keratosis pilaris, and have spent years with it. Your skin doesn't shed it's dead skin cells properly, and they start to grow over the hair follicles. It's pretty common in varying degrees of severity. The kind of cream you want to get is something like Amlactin, with lactic acid in it. It's a moisturizer, but also helps to exfoliate off that rough surface. Your skin doesn't exfoliate itself the way normal skin does, so help it along with a loofa while you're cleansing, before you use the cream. There is also a cream by DermaDoctor called KP Duty, but I find the Amlactin to work much better.

Q: Skin condition?
I have read somewhere that sunshine can help eradicate eczema (and/or psoriasis?) because it helps create Vitamin D in the body. Can you please tell me if the sunlight, to be effective here, needs to actually fall on the part of the body affected by the condition? Or can that part of the body be covered by your clothes in fact? Are there any natural remedies/foods, apart from oily fish , that can help?

A: My husband has psoriasis on the front of his legs, during the summer when he can wear shorts he lets the sun rays directly on the area and it does dry it up, when he can't get direct sun on his legs ( Like during the winter months or at work where he wears long pants ) he rubs a vitamin D cream on his legs before he dresses in the morning and again before he goes to bed at night, there isn't a cure for this condition yet but this treatment seems to work for him and it doesn't itch as much if the itching gets to the point that it is driving you crazy try using Maximum Strength Lanacane first aid spray it helps with the itch.

Q: What skin condition could this be and could there be a cure?
My husband has an odd skin condition that only affects him in the winter and he said he's had it since he was a child. His legs and arms will become so dry that his skin will look scaly with a brownish gray color. If he tries to peel this skin it will bleed, and bruise. So far he has tried every lotion known to man otc, but nothing has helped. He refuses to go to a dermatologist due to embarrassment . Does anyone know of a really good lotion he may be able to use?

A: I suppose it is embarrassing to show your arms or legs to a dermatologist, and get not only the correct diagnosis but also the correct treatment regimen. But, as a dermatologist, I can only give accurate advice after I"ve seen the problem, so without a picture of the problem, it's really impossible to tell you what condition he truly has. There are numerous conditions (which reaquire different treatments) that can present with "dry skin")

Q: What is this skin condition called and what causes it?
The skin on my toes is swollen, a little red and itchy when I touch it. When I press on it, it hurts a little bit. What's this skin condition and what causes it? I have this on 3 of my toes on the right foot. Nothing on the left side. No odor at all.

A: sounds like u might have ingrown toenails..is it on all of them? sometimes wearing shoes that are too narow can do that to our toenails. u just gots use a nailfile, and try to pull them up, as if u were cleaning them..lemmie know how it turns out. if theres an odor, then its fungal, and u need to get some fungal creme, or spray, or powder..

Q: What is that skin condition that begins with a "C", that relates to skin reacting to heat?
I went to the doctor yesterday and the doc told me I had a skin condition that produces "hives" when I am exposed to hot water or anything that causes me to be hot. I do not remember what he called the condition, Ive searched the internet, but cant find the medical term. Any help?

A: Cholinergic urticaria

Q: What kind of skin condition am i experiencing?
When bitten by an insect, my skin becomes so itchy and later becomes a wart, my skin's very dry. Some say its atopic dermatitis, but Im not really sure why my bites are developing into warts. Can you please help me figure out what kind of skin condition is this? And how do I cure my insect bites and get rid of my scars?

A: It's not becoming a wart -- warts are all caused a family of virii (the Human Papilloma Virus, HPV). It just appears similar to a wart. Just use an antihistamine gel/cream when you are bitten by something (like Benadryl cream/gel), and the problem shouldn't be so bad. That should help treat the condition -- it does sound like atopic dermatitis that you are experiencing. The bites should not be becoming scars unless you scratch them and irritate the area. If you do this, treat the area with an antibiotic ointment and cover it with a bandage.

Q: What can I do to help my skin condition, keratosis pilaris?
I have a skin condition called keratosis pilaris. I was born with it and I get little white bumps on my arms and legs. It looks like pimples/acne but it's not. I have tried every lotion and scrub, but nothing has worked. Does anyone have this skin condition who has had success in reducing the bumpy appearance? Also, because I have been picking at the bumps for years, I've gotten scars. Is there a good cream or lotion to make the scars fade away?

A: If you keep on scrubbing and loading on products with tons of chemicals it is only going to make your skin get more irritated. If I were you I would such to all organic products. Coconut and emu oil are wonderful for skin. Raw organic shea butter is wonderful also. Try going to a health store or look online..I get everything from rose mountain. There are many organic oils out there that help reduce inflammation, reddness, scars, etc.

Q: What is that skin condition called when there are patches of discoloration?
Like...say someone has dark skin, and then they have patches or blotchiness of lighter colored skin...what is that condition called?

A: Like .... Michael Jackson? It's called "Vitiligo".

Q: How can I know if my westie is developing a serious skin condition?
How can I know if my westie is developing a serious skin condition? I have read lots of articles about westies having problems with their skin, my 5 year old westy scartches her snout a lot, and she also has some grey dry spots on her belly. In my town there's no veterinary dermatologist. I have taken her to several vets but they only recommend vitacilina ointment which isnt helping.

A: if your dog has a skin problem the first sign is itching all the time if your dog doesn't have fleas then the vet will explain to you most likely it has allergies also you can tell if bald spots are there due to scratching

Q: What is this weird skin condition that makes the skin raise?
My friend has this condition, where if you scratch her skin, even lightly, about after 5-10 minutes everywhere you scratched will raise, and go a light red/pink colour. About after 20 minutes it's all completely gone, but does anyone have any idea what it might be?

A: It's called dermographism, and is one of the many forms of a hive. There is no known cause for this condition, as it seems to come out of nowhere; and at the same time, it often will disappear after a couple of years, too. If it bothers him, he can take some Benadryl; otherwise, he can just ignore it.

Q: How can I cure my flaky, cracked skin condition on my feet?
I first developed these symptons when I joined the military. I felt that my feet is often being rubbed against friction everytime I put on my heavy combat boots and went for combat training which last from day to night for 2 years until I dropped out from the army. I think is may be the possible reason I developed severe cracked feet! I apply moisturizing cream for my feet for 24/7! I even wrap my feet in heavy medical dressing and put on 2 pair of socks when I go to work to alleviate the friction rubbed against my feet so my skin won't flake off so easily! It helped to reduce the damage but my feet will still turn out worse than before I stepped out of my home to work! I even resorted to spending hours peeling off the dead skin after returning from work each day to avoid the ugly and embarassing sight of my cracked feet! This annoying condition has stayed with me for a year now and I'm desperately seeking cure for this disease! Any help or suggestions?

A: I am a woman and I suffered the same flaky, cracked skin before.get a pale of lukewarm water put your 2 feet for 15minutes.then get a really rough big stone scratch the dry area for 5 minutes, dry your feet and put lotion for really dry skin when it dry put on socks.Do it for a week and you'll see the changes that won't cost you a lot.Keep doing it for a month and wallah!!it's gone...believe me done that..and more...avoid using slippers for a while wear socks and shoes...

Q: Can you please tell me the skin condition I am experiencing?
I've been having them for the past few days, they say it's skin asthma. It's on my arms, stomach, back and legs. They look like little pink maps and at times, when aggravated they appear very red. It is currently subsiding although my feet seem swollen and hurt everytime I walk/slight pressure in contact. Is this exactly skin asthma? Or is it a serious condition? Thanks.

A: Looks like atopic dermatitis, which is related to other atopic disorders like asthma

Q: What's the name of the autoimmune skin condition that makes your skin welt with just a little scratch?
When you even scratch yourself lightly (like to scratch a light itch) Your skin welts up for 20 minutes or more. It's an autoimmune condition. First correct answer will get the 10 pts. I can't remember the name of it, and I want to research it more. (my brother has it)Thanks! dermatographia is what i was thinking of Thankyou SOO much!!!

A: Are you talking about dermatographia? I've seen it before when I worked in dermatology - you can "write" on the skin with a fingernail and the skin will flare up so you can read what you wrote.

Q: Is there a skin condition that makes it difficult to tan?
I spend a lot of time out in the Florida sun, yet I'm extremely pale with not even the faintest tan line. I wear sunscreen, but I know you can still tan when wearing sunscreen. I wear a lot of tank tops, so it's not like I'm covering up my skin. I'm beginning to think that my skin simply doesn't tan. Is there a possible skin condition that prevents me from tanning?

A: I feel your pain. I'm whiter than snow and I only ever burn in the sun. I haven't had a true tan my entire life. I don't know of any condition that doesn't allow the skin to tan. It all starts with the melanin levels in your skin that determine your skin shade. The sun is too powerful to not produce SOME kind of effect on your skin, but some people just can't tan.
