Q: what are some treatments of insomnia besides sleep aids?
I have already taken all the sleep medications there is. Im thinking of a sleep clinic but I heard if you have insomnia they just give you a sleep aid.
A: You should try brainwave entrainment. I had long-term, crushing insomnia for years and tried all the pills and herbs but they just didn't fix it. Brainwave entrainment uses ambient music tracks to lull your brain into producing the right brainwaves for sleep. People are right when they say you should change your lifestyle and this is part of that, because using it for a while 're-trains' your brain. At this point your brain is probably conditioned not to fall asleep, so you'll have to recondition it.
There are reviews for several options for this-one of them free-at the blog listed below.
Q: What's the best insomnia treatment besides milk and exercises?
Guys I just wonder what's the best insomnia treatment besides milk and exercises? Because I have tried nearly all of the insomnia treatments mentioned by most people, but it didn't better my insomnia, I only got 2-4 hours sleep each day and feeling very tired in the daytime, help me please!!!
A: If you want to find the best insomnia treatment, you should not miss a book called "Who move my insomnia", written by Dr Brown.K
there are quite a bunch of clever ways for you, for instance, how to take sleeping pills without getting addicted.
You can download the free e-book here
Q: Does anyone know a treatment for insomnia that involves a sensitivity to light and noise?
I'm an extremely light sleeper. If there is any noise, I probably won't get to sleep. So, I sleep with the fan on to drown out noises. Unfortunately, in the morning, I wake up with the sun. So, I don't need an alarm clock, and I wake up earlier and earlier during the summer months. I put up a thick blanket to cover my window in order to have some sanity. As well, if I wake up in the middle of the night, it often takes me a long time to fall back to sleep - if I do. Because I'm such a light sleeper, I think I actually don't get enough sleep. By the weekend, I need a long nap to offset the sleep I don't get during the week. Can anyone suggest any websites or ways to help with this sort of insomnia?
PS: ear plugs and masks don't work as they bother me and prevent me from sleeping. Way too sensitive!
A: I too am a light sleeper and suffer from insomnia. There are a few things that you can do/take. These were all recommended by my doctors and my brother-in-law who is an anesthesiologist because I did not want to take a Rx sleep aid.
1. Buy a Melatonin supplement. They are natural, come in 3mg pills, can get them at the grocery store. They help establish natural sleep patterns. You take one pill 20 minutes before you go to bed. They make you feel like you want to go to bed. If it is severe, you can take two. I used this when I worked nights so I could sleep during the day. You may experience more dreaming. Melatonin is what your body naturally produces to make you *sleepy*. You don't feel groggy in the morning.
2. After taking the Melatonin, get in a hot shower. When you get out your body temperature will drop. This mimics the process when you fall asleep (your temp drops when you first fall asleep). Helps you to get drowsy.
3. If those don't work try taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine- buy the cheap allergy pills. They are straight diphen. and a HECK of a lot cheaper than the name brand stuff and it's the same thing!) Start with one pill, but you can take two. I don't like this method because if you can't get at least 8 hours you may feel tired when you wake up. *Sometimes it doesn't always work and can have the opposite effect. This is random and they don't know why it happens. One day it works, the next it doesn't. But I would say it works more often than not. If it's not working right away, a 1/2 glass of wine or 1/2 a beer is acceptable to take with it. (Doctor's recommendation). A normal adult should be knocked out by two. (50mg?)
4. Try to take a brisk 30 min walk at least once a day. Excercise during the day (and the Vitamin D from the sun) helps with the natural production of Melatonin and Seratonin.
5. Take Omega 3. You'll feel better over all-- it can act as a Seratonin Re-uptake Inhibitor. Basically leaving more in your system (as I understand it).
Good Luck and Happy Dreams!
Q: Is there any type of natural treatment for this type of insomnia?
I don't know the name of this type of insomnia, or even if one exists, but at least three to four nights a week, I find my self unable to sleep. My body is completely wiped out, but my brain seems to be on overdrive. I have had this insomnia for roughly two years, and have yet to find a suitable, natural treatment that keeps working longer than a week or so.
For a better description of my insomnia, please read about it in my blog at this URL: hijabirocker.blogspot.com. It is the top post, and describes what the insomnia feelslike, in case more physical and mental descriptions are needed.
A: Get yourself some Nytol, you can get it from Boots or your local pharmacy,It will help you sleep, and return your natural sleep pattern.
Q: What is a good treatment for insomnia?
help help!! I am tired but when I lay down to go to sleep nothing happens!
A: The more you think about it the less you'll sleep, I've had the same thing.
Try avoiding all the usual culprits, caffeine etc (plus drugs - pills coke and speed)
Cheese is known to cause sleep issues, weird dreams etc.
You have to be physically tired to sleep, so make sure you're active in the day.
I'm not encouraging you to drink but a couple of glasses of red wine an hour before bed will knock you out for the night. If you get used to sleeping when you go to bed then when you go to bed without wine you should just click off in the same way.
One last thing, something my mother swears by, keep your bedroom for sleeping - no TVs etc. Watching TV before trying to sleep is often detrimental to your sleeping attempts.
Good luck!
Q: What's the best treatment for insomnia?
For the past few weeks I've been having trouble falling asleep. Once I'm asleep it's fine but it's taking me hours to get to sleep.
I've always been able to sleep so I'm not sure what's causing my insomnia. I'm not majorly worried about anything but I think it might be because my brain seems to go into overdrive and I cant help thinking about lots of random things.
Are there any tricks/treatments I could use which have worked for you?
A: I got the same challege!!
I find that when I do plenty of Physical activity during my day I sleep much better!!
Q: do you think UV treatment for blind people with insomnia would work?
i work in a care home with blind mentaly disable adults, alot of them dont sleep at night because they cant see that its dark outside no matter how much of a routine they are in or how tired they are... do you think UV treatment would work?
A: idk
Q: Insomnia Whilst Under Cancer Treatment?
Sorry I already have another question in here so forgive me those who frequent this section but - did anyone else undergoing R-CHOP or any kind of cancer treatment suffer bad insomnia? I know I should be resting and I am very tired but yeesh I can't sleep! If I lie down I just shuffle about wanting to get up again.
Any thoughts? Natural remedies to sleep?
A: I've experienced horrific insomnia for years and it became much worse when I started ABVD chemo, but I haven't yet found a good remedy. If you have the energy to exercise earlier in the day, try to because it will help you to sleep. Try to spend 10 minutes in the early morning outside without any sunblock or sunglasses on so your eyes can absorb the light which will activate the pineal gland in your brain that produces melatonin. That will also help you. About an hour before you go to bed, do some light yoga and deep breathing exercises. Don't eat anything for at least three hours before bed except for maybe a small bowl of cereal or something of that nature.
For me, it's partly a mind over matter situation because I'll get exasperated not being able to sleep and will want to bolt out of bed and work on my art or play around online, and all that does it further stimulate my mind and cause me to stay up longer. I made a playlist of really soothing music, and I also have an air purifier in my room that creates white noise and an app on my iPhone called Naturespace (it's free) of soothing sounds. Try to force yourself to stay in bed and listen to the music, or to just read a book rather than getting up and starting anything. Try rubbing just a bit of lavender oil on your temples and wrists; it has a calming effect. My onco gave me a small dose of an antidepressant that was supposed to help me to sleep better, but so far its totally sucked. I'm 17 and have a really fast metabolism that reacts weirdly to medicine, though. Maybe one of them could help you.
Talk to your oncologist about all of this. Prednisone causes insomnia in lots of people. Maybe the dosage can be changed a bit. You might be able to take some sleeping pills, either the over-the-counter kind or prescription. I can't, but lots of people can. Just start with a small dose.
I'm sorry I couldn't help more! Good luck! : )
Q: insomnia treatment?
Can you please tell me what meds are used in insomnia treatment? Each month there are at least 5 days that I can’t sleep. I read somewhere that cause could be hormonal imbalance that I am suffering of. Anyway can anyone give me this information?
A: There are three new ones out that really work and are NOT habit-forming!! They are Lunesta, Rozerem, and Ambien CR. The Ambien CR not only helps you fall asleep, but helps you STAY asleep. Talk to your doctor, and you should have no problem getting a prescription for one of those.
Do you think those 5 days are PMS related? That would make sense. See your doctor, and I wish you the best of luck! :)
Q: Sleep Apnea treatment: Dental device that allows you to breath through your mouth at night?
I've been officially diagnosed with sleep apnea in the mild to moderate range. I also suffer from depression (probably sleep deprivation induced) and insomnia (late to bed/early to rise). I sleep for between 3 to 5 hours a night. Obviously this isn't enough sleep.
I've tried CPAP, but can't get used to it, mainly due to my problems with insomnia (my mind has trouble being "quiet"). I have a hard time sleeping without the distraction of a CPAP, and WITH it.... it's impossible for me to sleep. I litterally just DON'T SLEEP with it on. I've been trying for 2 months (seriously).
I know there are dental devices that relocate your jaw and tounge, but I seem to have problems mainly with my "soft palette". I notice that if I breath through my mouth, it's impossible for it to close off. SO, I was wondering if anyone uses or knows of a dental device that would have holes in it to allow you to breath through your mouth at night? Something like a mouth guard with a tube coming out... THANKS!
A: My husband has the same problem...It takes longer than 2 months to get use to the CPAP....he had to change the device that covers your nose to a more comfortable one.
I don't think its the CPAP you are having trouble with..Its falling asleep and staying asleep.
Could be hormones making you stay awake and waking up early
Out of wack Hormones can make you stay awake and wake up every hour.
Check with your Doctor, antidepressent pills helped me sleep
Q: Can anyone recommend an effective treatment for psychosomatic insomnia?
I have Chronic fatigue syndrome and I have had a problem with sleeping but as I get only one day out I worry the night before that I wont sleep. The panic and worry that I wont and have to call the day off means that its a vicious circle. I have been on tablets but I want off them. Hypnosis is a step forward as I can get to sleep but dont keep asleep. I have tried lavender, routine, no tea, melatonin all have little effect and not reliable. Does anyone have any recommendations of alternative therapies thought field therapy etc. I would be grateful for any recommendations as it is affecting the only part of life I have left.
thank you
A: I know your problem is NOT psychosomatic insomnia---it is food additive related. I wrote you an e-mail but YA could not send it through, saying your e-mail address was not confirmed. You can contact me via YA. Click on "Invisible Man" above and when it goes to details click "Contact Invisible Man."
I gave up on doctors and did years of researching this, going from two or three good nights of sleep per week to sleeping like a baby each and every night!
Q: Sleep apnea, little REM sleep, insomnia?
Hi there-
Recently diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea. Also it has been stated that I am not staying in REM sleep for any useful length of time.
I usually sleep very little at night...always have been nocturnal.
I sleep best during the day. But the last 5 months have been rough.
I only stay asleep for a couple hours and then feel hyper and irritable when I get up.
New diagnosis of sleep apnea and very poor amount of REM Sleep.
I am doing a titration study tonight with c-pap machines to see what volume works for me.
I would like to hear from others on how if at all treatment has helped?
If your situation is similar to mine as far as minimal amounts of sleep with diagnosis of apnea?
What can I expect with treatment. Some have said they feel better right away. Others have said it takes awhile. I would like to hear anyone else's experience with this.
Thank you.
PS...Do you ever adjust to life with that machine stuck on your nose?
And is there sex after c-pap even if your significant other doesn't have a thing for Darth Vader breath sounds?
A: I have the same problem. I am on a cpap machine I use the full mask. If there is a problemu will feel better right away. I think that it is all linked to oxygen in the body. I pap machine is like a small humidifer which u breath in thru your nose. do u have sinus problems? If your nose is plugged all the time, a full mask will force u to breath thr your nose. The first night I slept 12 hrs. I never woke up. I found out that I was exhausted, maybe half dead and did not know it.
Q: Marijuanna for insomnia treatment?
I have dealt with dehabilitating insomnia for over 5 years. Since I have been pregnant, it has magically dissapeared (Thank God!!) and I feel pretty great. I'm kind of worried about it returning after the birth of my daughter. I used to be on all kinds of prescribed drugs to help me sleep, but the in turn almost ruined my life. I was a walking zombie, addicted to multiple antidepressents and sleep inducers. After going through a horrible withdrawal period from all these drugs, I told myself I would never do it again. Years ago, for a short time, I made a marijuanna tea at night to help me sleep. It was wonderful! It worked like a charm, and I would wake up feeling great. I stopped because my dr said I should, and that's when I started getting prescribed all the pills. So I'm kind of thinking about revisiting that therapy in case it does come back later in life. I know I can expect a variety of answers here, and I welcome them all! What do you guys think of this idea?
Pro's: No addiction, no tar in lungs (since it's in tea form), no pills to take, very effective
Cons: It's illegal (big one!)
**The birth control pill theory is very interesting to me, I'll have to test that theory out after the birth of the baby!
**For the one who wanted to know how the tea was made with marijuanna--it was extracted with a fat (butter) and then put in some sleepytime tea. Trust me-it worked!
**I definately don't agree with letting my dr's prescribe me all those pills because "he knew better." I would rather not take anything and suffer than go through that again.
**I do agree that it would set a bad example for my daughter. That is also one of the reasons why I stopped before (I have another daughter).
**Those with severe insomnia know that Tylenol pm does not work.
It's a catch 22 for me. Like, are multitudes of pills better, or is a simple herbal tea better? In the end I probably won't do it, it was just an idea in my head. Thanks for all your info and opinions though.
My goodness Dr. Phil--I think you need to calm down. You can tell me your opinion rationally instead of crazy. I listen to all sides.
BTW-It not like I smoked joints in front of my daughter, when I did it, I was simply just drinking some tea out of a cup 15 minutes before I went to bed. (Not that it makes it any better, I know, but I just wanted everyone to know that.)
A: Sounds to me like the pharmaceutical companies have your docter in their pockets. Just prescribing you a whole bunch of pills like that, when he probably knew what they would do to you. To answer your question,I would have to agree with you on using marijuana tea to go to sleep because when I have used it in the past it has made me feel sleepy.
Q: A friend has developed insomnia and wants to stop her medicine, any suggestion for other treatment?
She mainly hates that she has to take medicine to sleep. She is stressed by some business and personal things (that she can't change). But without her medicine, she has not slept for 3 days and has a doctor appointment (again!), but so far they don't offer much help, just hand her pills!
A: I went through a similar cycle with no help from anywhere. Drugs left me zonked the next day too. Eventually I found relief through my own little techniques. Stress doesn't help mind you. She has to find a pattern that suits her. The trick is that when your head hits the pillow it can't say "OK go to sleep, go to sleep this time". The n the cycle has already begun. I drink a warm malted milk and then always force my imagination to go somewhere. For me the start is always very science fiction, but that is just me. Before you know it the mind can wonder on its own and zzzzzzzz..... Just advise mind you, insomnia is different for everyone and there are different types. The other main variety is waking up 3 hours into sleep and then being stuck awake.
