Q: Do you have any suggestions for dog allergy relief?
My dog's skin gets really irritated this time of year and she scratches constantly. My vet has given her steroids in the past, but they make her food crazy and she is already overweight. Are there any other remedies I could try?

A: The single biggest cause of food allergies for the vast majority of dogs is food related. 1. Switch to a food that has NO grains and NO corn. Wellness Core, Inova Evo, Orijen, many others have no grains and no corn. 2. Look for a simple and limited protein source. Turkey is a very good one. Duck is another. Don't do dog food with 5-6 different types of protein. 3. And then rotate foods. Because if your dog is not allergic to chicken but you feed chicken for a full year, you increase the likelihood that the dog will become allergic to chicken. BTW, a "low-fat" food tends to have more carbos and more grains. Which not only promotes allergies but adds weight (through filler) to a dog. The best way to get a lean dog is: --a medium or high protein dog food --high fat levels --no grains or corn --precise measurement of portions. Do NOT overfeed. And treats mean less food given (or set some food aside and that serves as treats). --and exercise. But even without a big increase in exercise you can see a change in weight quickly by portion control.

Q: Are there any allergy relief medicine for sunscreen allergies?
As I said, I'm allergic to sunscreen and I applied some chapstick to my lips, and what do you know? There's sunscreen on it, so now my lip is swollen a little and it's dripping some liquid. How can I relieve the swelling? OTC Meds or simple tips would be nice.

A: Put ice on it, but not directly. Put the ice in a zip lock baggy and wrap in paper towel or a thin cloth. You can also get an over the counter (OTC) allergy medicine such as Benadryl from your local drug store or Wal-Mart. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Benadryl so you can buy the store brand if you need to save a little cash. Just make sure it has the same ingredients as the Benadryl. Good Luck~

Q: Have you found that allergy relief pillows work well?
I bought four of them today and I am hoping they help. Have they helped you personally? PS. I did not buy allergy pillow covers; just the allergy relief pillows. I tried the allergy pillows last night. They did not work at all for me personally, I will try the allergy mattress cover and all that stuff though anyways. Thank you everyone!

A: well i use latex pillows from Bed, Bath and Beyond and they are nice, springy and they don't give me allergic reactions. (I am allergic to dust mites.) Before I used those pillow covers and they worked pretty good, but since i have discovered the latex like the latex best. So yea it did say allergy relief on them and they are wonderful, i would always be waking up congested and sniffling and now i never do! so yes they make a difference for me!

Q: What is the difference between Allegra and Flonase for allergy relief -take one or both?
I know they are dispensed differently... My doctor gave me a prescription for both without explanation and I can't really afford both. Is one better than the other??

A: Allegra is an allergy pill and Flonase is a nasal spray. I prefer Flonase, but they both work great. Get whichever one you can afford.

Q: what is the name of the stuff you rub on your nose for allergy relief?
I saw a commercial for it the other day - you rub it on your nose instead of taking something orally and it prevents allergy symptoms.

A: something green, methanol?

Q: Can Claritin / Loratadine be snorted for quicker allergy relief?
I'm wondering if this is relatively safe. They take like an hour before they start working if swallowed. My allergies get really bad really fast so I was thinking this would be a faster means of clearing up my sinuses. I've tried researching it but all i found were the same unanswered questions. Please don't bother to answer if you just want to tell me not to and have no evidence to back up your opinions.

A: Actually it will get in your system quicker and I do it when my allergies are acting up. It's that blood brain barrier thing 5 mins you'll be fine.

Q: How can i find allergy relief?
I can't stop sneezing indoors and out? I need a break!

A: I know your pain! This season has agitated my allergies more than ever in the past 2 years. You can do a few things... 1. Vacuum your house if you have carpet every 2 days and dust your house/room with a damp cloth once a week so it doesn't swish the dust all over the place. 2. Put away any pillows or mattress pads you have that have goosedown or feathers 3. Get an allergen filter for your air conditioning duct (if you have central air) I found out the one we have wasn't the allergen filter.. we had a cheaper one.. 4. Stay indoors when pollen is at its highest.. If I recall correctly it's between 11am and something like 4pm 5. Take an over the counter allergy antihistimine if your doctor allows it. (Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claratin) Benadryl makes you drowsy so make sure you don't drive or anything if you take Benadryl. 6. Check Pollen.com to see the daily pollen forecast for your zip code 7. There are some natural remedies you can use as well like certain herbs and stuff but you'd have to research online for that but the first six things listed up there should help you get some relief.

Q: How far west do you have to go to get away from the humidity and get some allergy relief?
Is it Missouri?

A: New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Western Montana. Santa Fe/Taos area is good; Denver also. Desert and mountains both provide relief from humidity & many allergies. If you're looking to relocate consider the California Gold Country, beginning with Nevada City. Western Oregon & Washington have humidity, but usually cool humidity. Western Washington & Oregon is dry. Look at Arizona & Nevada as well. Carson City, NV is nice.

Q: Does anyone know any non-antihistamine allergy relief products?
I am having allergy skin tests in a few days... and im not allowed to have any antihistamines 4 days prior.

A: Hi JCDB Here are some ideas on how to heal the issue. You also need to learn about cleansing the body of toxins by doing a colon and liver cleanse to heal for long term health. Cause of Allergies Overall, the underlying causes of allergy and sensitivity are dietary and lifestyle factors specifically titled as imbalanced immune function, barrier function default (such as "leaky gut" syndrome), and toxic overload. Each of these are, in varying degrees, responsible for the development and continuation of allergy and sensitivity. A colon and liver cleanse would help rid of the toxins in the blood. Herbal Medicine: There are a variety of herbs that offer relief from allergies, such as goldenseal, red sage, and goldenrod. To reduce mucus, try astringents such as yarrow and myrrh (Commiphora myrrha). These help to contract inflamed tissues and reduce secretions and discharges. To strengthen immune response use echinacea, astragalus root, goldenseal root, and Pfaffia paniculata (suma or Brazilian ginseng). These herbs can be effective and safe for treating weakened immune systems. Eating raw Garlic and Onions will provide relief as well. The more you use the faster the relief will come. Cayenne pepper is a favorite herb among those treating allergy patients. The active ingredient is a strong anti-inflammatory, and it is recommend to allergy suffers, including asthma patients, as a simple and effective treatment. Sprinkling liberal amounts of the pepper on meals for a few days can provide relief. Or better yet eat them raw and sweat for a few minutes. Watch your sinus clear up quickly. Although herbal remedies have shown excellent results in reducing allergy/sensitivity symptoms, using herbs to treat allergies involves an individual approach. Some particularly effective anti-inflammatory herbs are stinging nettle, Ginkgo biloba, and licorice. Chinese skullcap, ephedra, and feverfew are others to consider for treating allergy symptoms. Patients whose conditions are severe should consult with a trained herbalist or naturopath. A major symptom of allergies is gastrointestinal upset, including bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Demulcent herbs can alleviate these symptoms (demulcent is a term used by herbalists to describe an herb that has a protective effect on the mucous membranes by minimizing irritation). The most commonly used herbs are marshmallow, slippery elm bark, cabbage juice, okra, fenugreek, and aloe vera. Homeopathy: Homeopathy has widespread applications for the treatment of allergies. In many situations, minute diluted doses of the substance a person is allergic to can be prepared as a homeopathic solution that triggers the body`s natural ability to heal itself. Homeopathic remedies are best prescribed by a competent homeopath. Self-diagnosis is discouraged due to the variety of factors that must be considered before the appropriate treatment is selected. However, the following remedies can be helpful: Ferrum phos, lycopodium, and silica. Juice Therapy: A juice fast of organic vegetable juices for 2-3 weeks can help detoxify the body, thus improving its ability to cope with allergies. Two useful juice combinations for this purpose are beet, carrot, and cucumber; and carrot and celery. For added benefit, add a small piece of ginger root to either juice combination. Best of health to you

Q: can i take allergy relief and a headache relief?
and some cough drops ? im sick right now and i have a bad headache and my throat hurts. its allergy season for me right now. please respnd fast i cant take my bad headache any much longer.

A: Yes, you can take both meds at the same time but I would only take one of each to start to make sure you don't have a bad reaction to them. You should not have any reaction but some people do. As far as your headache, take a pain reliever then put an icepack on your head where it hurts the most. Wrap it in a thin cloth (dish towel works good) and hold it on your head where it hurts the most for 15-20 minutes. That will constrict the blood vessels and the headache will feel better. I've had headaches all my life and I do this all the time. Just stay quiet while you are holding the ice on your head and stay quiet for a while after it goes away or it will come right back. You can use the ice every hour for 15-20 minutes until your head stops hurting. It only takes once for me.

Q: Natural seasonal allergy relief for children?
I just started using Bio Allers Allergy Relief Homeopathy for my 7 yr old daughter who suffers from seasonal allergies-its amazing at how fast it clears up her red itchy skin-instantaneously! I've read satisfied reviews from many who've used it. She also has a cough and an occasional wheezing when she inhales deeply(was already examined/x-rayed and it's not asthma so I know it's allergies). Has anyone had success with Bio Allers for all seasonal allergy symptoms? Any recommendations on other natural products that can also help with her cough/wheezing? She already takes vit C daily. Thanks for the help in advance!

Q: Allergy relief without medication?
My nose is running, my eyes are watering, I have a headache, I'm dead tired and irritable, and my stomach hurts. I already took some allergy medication, but it didn't really help. Any tips or home remedies?

A: Try a hot steamy shower. or a hot bath with some minty or strong smelling herbs added. Have some hot peppermint herbal tea. Put a hot compress on your forehead and neck. It might be more than allergies, maybe a cold, or your body overeacting to allergies. There are so many allergy meds and they don't all work for all people.
